We recently lost our pet mallard duck last Monday. It’s a male and just starting to change colors into the male mallards we are used to seeing in the wild. He, however, is NOT WILD. He came to an elementary school as an egg, (along with others) purchased for a special project. The 1st grade students at this school got to witness the incubation and the beginning life cycle of ducklings. What makes this duck special is that he has severe handicap. He was born/hatched with his left leg fused together. He was adopted by one of the teachers, (myself) and quickly became part of our family. He had just started to fly a little to get around the backyard better. Unfortunately he was not the most graceful at taking off and landing because his deformed leg often made him “unbalanced”. On Monday (8/1) he flew out of our yard and into a neighbors yard. He was found and taken to the local bird rescue. Posters were made and put up around our neighborhood in hopes someone had seen or found him and calls were made to the local bird rescue. No word from anyone until that Friday, when the person who found him on Monday and took him to the bird rescue, called in regards to the poster. I was later told by the bird rescue that he was released on Lake Ralphine at Howarth Park. We are really concerned that his handicap, would make him too easy of a target out there for predators and want to have him back home, “safe and sound”. If you’ve seen him or heard about him, PLEASE CALL! (707) 477-9416.

Thank you!
