Found:
Cockatiel, male
The usual coloring – grey body/wings, white flashes, yellow head, peach-colored cheeks. His colors are very bright and his feathers are in good condition, but he’s extremely thin (his keel is sharp-edged). I’d guesstimate, given how quickly he’s bounced back, that he’s been out lost for at least a couple of weeks, but not much more than that. The first night I had him he just repeated the following over and over, every ten minutes or so: eat a little, sleep on top of the food, wake up, eat some more, fall asleep. 😉

We don’t know where in the Bay he might be from, because he was found on the decks of an ocean-going tanker, the “Mississippi Voyager,” in the middle of SF Bay near the Golden Gate Bridge . The tanker was heading into dock in Richmond at the time. The first mate called WildCare for help, and we advised her on how to keep and feed the bird until they docked (36 hours later). The second mate brought him to me at the harbor (see attached photos).

He’s now fairly lively but confused, poor little guy – doesn’t seem to like being alone, sits as close to me as possible in his cage, but is afraid of me if I approach him. He doesn’t want to sit on my finger or take treats from my hand. He’s picky about food – so far, he likes millet (period). Am offering him veggies, but he shows no interest. He’s very talkative.

The tanker cockatiel is currently with: Winnie Kelly, 510-757-9507, (in Richmond, off Central)
