The early bird gets the worm. Or in the case of a lost cockatiel, found.

“You can’t make stuff like this up,” said Sgt. Paul Nelson of the Jamestown Police Department.

According to Nelson, the department was called early Tuesday morning to recover a bird that had been found.

He said that a woman had called at 8:17 a.m. and police responded to the area of 22 Prather Ave., where the woman had come in contact with the cockatiel.

“She said she was just walking down the sidewalk and there was a cockatiel and it jumped up, she says ‘It’s on my shoulder right now,'” he said.

Nelson said the woman then tried contacting neighbors in the area by knocking on their doors and was unable to find the owner of the bird.

“We had our animal control officer go over and when he pulled up it was actually on her head,” said Nelson. “It is a very friendly bird.”

The animal was then taken to the police department, where officers learned of a woman who had lost a bird much like this one two months ago.

“One of our people got online and saw that this lady about two months ago had lost one, and it looked like the same bird though it had been quite awhile,” he said.

The woman, who works for the code office, came in and told officers that it was not her lost animal.

Nelson said that because of her knowledge on the subject of cockatiels, the bird is being cared for by the woman until the owner can be identified.

“But she has had birds like this forever and she had an extra cage, so what we did, we got all her information, she actually works for the code office, so we know her, and she is taking care of the bird,” he said.

The bird is described as gray with some white in its wings, yellow head and orange around its eye. The woman taking care of the bird also told police that the bird had clipped wings.

Anyone with information regarding the animal, or the whereabouts of the owner, is asked to call the department at 483-7537.
